Build A Solar Panel And Start Generating Free Power by: Yasmin Wilde
If you're sick of paying electricity bills, and you can read and follow a set of easy instructions, then building solar panels is for you. Solar panels work by converting solar energy from the sun, into a domestic electricity supply. The solar panels that you see for sale commercially are extremely expensive (think $20,000 plus), because they are made from highly efficient silicon, using very expensive machinery and equipment. Not all solar panels, however, have to be made from silicon. Other materials, such as cuprous oxide, can be used instead. Even though it may be less efficient, cuprous oxide produces the same photoelectric effect as silicon, but it still makes it possible for light to convert to electricity through the material. Think about the difference in efficiency, compared to cost and you'll find, the savings people are making by building their own solar panels are enormous and make it well worth building home made panels instead of buying commercial products. The parts are easily sourced. Any hardware store should supply everything you need and then, you will be harnessing your own solar power in no time. An 8" x 24" panel should supply enough power to run lights and your basic domestic appliances, such as CD players, toasters and so on. All you need to do is keep building more until you have enough to power your whole home and then relax and never pay another power bill again. Once you have made one, it's a simple process to repeat over and over. Learning to build your own solar panel is easy, especially with the help of a professional, DIY solar kit, with step-by-step instructions. You will also need storage batteries so that you don't waste any surplus power, and you have reserves for later, when it's dark and gloomy, for example. You will need a deep cycle battery for continuous charging if you plan on using the battery all the time. The cheapest batteries are available for around $60. The rest of the materials are pretty simple: You'll need a sheet of copper flashing. These are available from any suburban hardware store, as are alligator clips and lead, a small LCD multimeter, you will also need sand paper, or a wire brush and sheet metal shears. Everything else should be easily sourced from home: an electric stove, table salt, a plastic bottle and water. All that's missing now is a set of DIY instructions.
